How to Remove a Page Break in Word

This is the easiest way to locate and remove a Word page break. Word allows you to see all the layout and markup elements hidden in your document. This includes both manual and automatic additions. They are easy to remove once you have revealed them.

  1. In the ribbon, select the Home tab. Select the Show/Hideicon in the Paragraph section (it looks similar to P).

  2. All page breaks within the document will be displayed on the page.

  3. Highlight the page break that you wish to delete, and then press the Delete button.

  4. You have removed the pagebreak. This means that all text on the previous page will be visible above the text below it. To make it legible again, you will need to add some spacing (for example, hit Enter). You will probably also want to deactivate the Show/Hideicon.

You can remove page breaks from Word using brute force. Simply place the cursor at the beginning of each paragraph and continue hitting the Backspace keys until everything between the paragraphs is deleted, including the pagebreak.

Use Find and Replace (Windows).

Do you have a lot of page breaks in your document and need to get rid of them all? Use Word to search for and replace pages breaks, just like any other element in your document.

  1. Navigate to the Homepage tab. Select Replace in the Editing section.

Alternativly, you can use the Cltl+ H keyboard key shortcut to open the Find & Replace window.
  2. Select More.

  3. Select Special.

  4. Select Manual Page Breaks.

  5. To replace a page break, use the Replace field to add one space using the space bar. You can also use a number and symbol to help you find the place.

  6. Select Replace all, and each page break in your text will be replaced with whatever you enter in the Replace field. Although you will need to clean up the results from the find-andreplace, all page breaks have been removed.

Use Show/Hide (Mac), to remove page breaks in Word

Word for Mac has the same steps, but the layout of the screen is slightly different.

  1. Click Home in the ribbon

  2. Click the Show/Hide Icon (P). To reveal the Show/Hide icon, if your Word window is small, click Paragraph.

  3. All page breaks within the document will be displayed on the page.

  4. Highlight the page break that you wish to delete, and then click the Delete button.

  5. You have now removed the page break. All text on the previous page will now match the text above it. To make it legible again, you will need to add some spacing (for instance, press Enter). You will likely want to deactivate the Show/Hide icons.

Use Find and Replace (Mac).

The process for Mac is identical, but the menu layouts may be slightly different.

  1. Open the Find and replace pane (Edit > Locate > Replace or magnifying glasses > magnifying glasses > Replace).

  2. Click the down arrow in the Locate field.

  3. Click Manual Page Break.

  4. To replace a page break, create a new replacement field by adding a single space using the space bar. You can also use a symbol or number to help you find the place. The column below shows all page breaks in the document.

  5. To replace every page break in your text with the Replace all option, click the Replace all button. Although you will need to clean up the results from the find-andreplace, all page breaks have been removed.

Controlling when Word Inserts Page Breaks

These tips are applicable to page breaks you have manually added, but Word can also automatically add page breaks in certain cases. You can control the settings by going to > Paragraph Line and page breaks. These are the options:

  • Widow/Orphan control: This prevents the last sentence from being stranded on another page and keeps two lines together at all time. Uncheck this if you are okay with a stranded term and no page breaks.
  • Continue with the next: Keep at least two paragraphs together at any time.
  • Keep lines connected This prevents Word from breaking up paragraphs and preventing Word from adding breaks in the middle.
  • Page break prior to: Adds an page break before a paragraph to keep the entire block of text together.
